SERVE VANCOUVER
This Thursday!

This Thursday is the Open Door Serve Vancouver Evening. It's a chance to express our DNA as a community in a tangible way. Our Community life verse is Matthew 5:16: "Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven." Let's make this a really special evening.

Here is how it will work:

1) Hannah, James, Kayla, and Steven are making soup (please make enough)
2) Hannah will bring bread
3) Lizzie will bring sandwiches
4) Joe will bring cups/ gloves/ and spoons
5) We will all meet at the Jungs at 7pm (sharp) and will take the bus/ drive to the corner of Main and Hastings (401 Main Street Vancouver BC V6A 2T7)
6) We will stand in small groups of 3-4 on the four corners at Main and Hastings serving soup/bread/and sandwiches to people walking by who are interested.
7) We will start serving by 7:45 and be done by 8:45.

The goal of this evening is to serve vancouver by simply feeding anyone who is hungry with dignity and a smile. This is a great event to invite a friend to.

The Open Door Community is will be watching "Up in the Air". It's a movie about "a man with job that has him traveling around the country firing people. Ryan Bingham leads an empty life out of a suitcase, until his company does the unexpected: ground him"

After the movie we will have time for small group discussion on various ideas and issues which arrise out of the movie. This is a great event to invite a friend to experience the Open Door community.

A few comments about this movie.
It's important to reconize that the movies we select have been selected not simply because "they are good" or "entertaining" but because they are thoughtful, a social critic, or a movie which has the capacity to generate robust and healthy discussion. And while we will not select movies which intend to celebrate or hearold sin we will also not shy away from movies which have sin in them. The purpose of movie nights are to discusss, disagree, challange, and be challanged by a director/writer/actor's work of art. We do this, as in all things, through a Christian worldview. So, as to not to cause anyone to stumble unrighteously as a result of this movie..please be aware that this movies (and all movies) rating and the reasons for that rating selection.

We will be meeting at the Jung's at 7pm (the movie will start at 7 exactly)

It's happening. Don't miss it.

...with a slight date change. It'll be the saturday and sunday after what we originally intended.

It's going to be amazing: Food, Fellowship, Fun, Worship, Devotionals, Fun, Food, Fun.

We will leave on Saturday after breakfast and arrive by 11am. After an awesome day with lots planned, we'll go to sleep and wake up Sunday morning for another awesome day. We will be back to Vancouver in time for dinner on Sunday night

So...let us know that you are coming asap!

Where we will be going? Hint: It's near Harrison Lake.

We will provide exact details about where the retreat home is and what to bring in a email which we will send out this coming week.

OD Movie Night
Thursday night from 7:00-9:00pm

Invite a friend to watch the movie, Surrogates, with the Open Door this thursday. Afterwards, we will have discussion questions which will probably provoke some good hearty discussion.

The movie is not A+, but it's not bad either. It's a great movie to watch with others and discuss.

A couple things happening this week:

1. Guys and Girls joint Bible Study - Thursday - 7-8:30pm @ Granville Chapel

We will be going through the final chapter of Galatians

2. BBQ at the Kits Beach - Friday - 6:30-8:30

This is a Student Ministry BBQ at Kits Beach. Open Door will be helping to serve both the junior and senior high students. This is going to be a casual gathering with lots of food and a small time of recognizing graduates in all the student ministries at GC. It is a chance to really open our doors to some new graduates who will be beginning to spend their time with us.

More details (where exactly we are meeting) will be updated on Thursday

Just wanted to remind you that Bible Study will be happening this Thursday.

There are not many weeks left until summer, and until many of you scatter to different destinations...so we will be doing a joint study this Thursday at Granville Chapel. I know that it is the girls "week off", but after talking to Mel, we both agree that it would be good for the girls to come out and anchor ourselves to Jesus, together.

Time: 7-8:30 (be on time...because we will be spending time praying for each other)

Soup and Solidarity

On Friday, March 27th our community will be fasting.

Fasting is "the voluntary denial of an otherwise normal function for the sake of intense spiritual activity" (Richard Foster)

Its purpose is "to interrupt the routines and so sharpen our awarness of the eternal essentials" (Eugene Peterson)

On Friday, we will voluntarily not eat. In doing so, we will seek to be in solidarity with the hungry in our city and our world.

Solidarity means: "an intentional and costly stance of being with the poor of our society, those who are left out, disregarded, invisible, unwanted. It is a commitment to foster deepening human communion across social lines of exclusion that are fraught with fear and suspicion" (Dave Diewert, Streams of Justice)

In parks and on street corners, we will break our fast by serving soup to people in our community and eating together. It will be a chance to actively and publicly engage in Christian discipleship.
